Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcome.”

Students

Student leadership as demonstrated through sports, academic achievement and social excellence, is a corner stone of our school. Our students are concerned about the environment and the world around them. They take a lead role in promoting awareness of a variety of global, political and climate issues. They are active organizers in special event planning and charity initiatives throughout the year. Our students have initiated a ‘Pennies for Burma’ drive and a ‘Charity Tree for China’ campaign for the Red Cross where they raised thousands of dollars for each cause. Our student body also raises funds for the Terry Fox Foundation (community walk for Terry), the Heart and Stroke Foundation (Jump Rope for Heart), Child Haven, and FAMSAC (food and snowsuit drive). Our Eco team continues to work hard to help instill the importance of recycling, reusing and ‘turning off’ lights and computers in our school. Our Junior students also serve as lunch monitors, WITS leads, ambassadors for the school at assemblies, club organizers, milk monitors, and reading buddies. In addition to frequent and informal recognition, we also acknowledge the contributions of our incredible school leaders in our classrooms, school announcements, newsletters, community newspapers, assemblies and in the Principal’s Report to school council. We also recognize student leadership by incorporating their suggestions into our planning.

Staff

The Knoxdale staff is made up of highly qualified professionals who bring a wealth of academic credentials and personal interests and expertise to our classrooms. Professional qualifications include: Bachelors and Masters degrees in Arts, Fine Arts, Physical Education, Social Science and Sciences, as well as additional qualifications in Special Education, French as a Second Language, Reading, Integrated Arts, Dramatic Arts, Physical and Health Education, Guidance and Computers in Education. They demonstrate their leadership as curriculum leaders, coaches and mentors. Staff has initiated numerous clubs and programs designed to increase student engagement, to promote greater achievement and to promote healthy active living. Knoxdale staff is enthusiastically involved in extra-curricular activities for all our students and provide leadership both within the Board and the community. Staff members have been nominated for the National Capital Educator’s Award for academic excellence and for the South-West Regional Coaching Award for outstanding athletic contributions. One of our teachers has received the Director’s Citation Award. Our teachers serve as mentor teachers to numerous Bachelor of Education candidates on a yearly basis from the University of Ottawa. They also provide on-going support to their colleagues, on topics such as balanced Math programs, literature circles, problem solving, as well as on assessment and evaluation of students. We continually acknowledge the positive contributions of staff members in daily announcements, newsletters, internal memos, assemblies and reports to School Council.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Parent and community volunteers contribute many hours of valuable time to the benefit of our students and school community. They believe that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. Our parent and community volunteers assist in the office, maintain our flower beds and the community rink, help support initiatives in the school, volunteer in the classrooms, help to keep our library in good working order, serve on school council, attend field trips and sporting events, and coordinate our lunch programs. They play an essential and vital role in the education of our students.

Our dedicated Knoxdale Community School Council (KCSC) and parent community fund many very important programs for their children and for our staff members. They support the school through continuous fundraising for resources and experiences to help children at all ages: technology for the classrooms, recess equipment, sports jerseys for our school teams, special presentations and more. KCSC meets the first Tuesday of each month and meetings are productive, student focused, and always positive. School Council participates in our School Learning Plan and serves as an important advisory body. New members are always welcome! Knoxdale’s parent and community volunteers are invaluable partners. We look for opportunities to thank them regularly in school newsletters, at assemblies and at our annual volunteer celebration.

Community

Knoxdale is fortunate to have an involved and supportive community. Local area businesses regularly provide support for fundraising events and School Council events, such as our annual Craft and Bake Sale, Family Dance and Family Fun Picnic. We recognize the generous contributions of our community partners through posters, school announcements, school newsletters, school web site, principal’s report to school council, and thank you cards.

Strong partnerships have been established with a number of organizations including FAMSAC, the Snowsuit Fund, the Ottawa 67s, the Ottawa Legion, and ONFE (Ottawa Volunteers in Education). We value our relationships with the larger community.
